SEVILLE
Seville’s first Jewish community was founded in the 4th century. Following riots in 1391, a lot of the existing synagogues were turned into churches the most important of which is the Church of Santa Maria la Blanca; it is worth the visit. There is a huge collection of information relating to north and south America in the Archives of the Indies which is not limited to items such as the account books of Luis de Santagel, who was a Converso, and in 1492 helped Jews leave the country as well as financed Columbus.

Presently, Toledo has no established Jewish community, but is the historical hub of Spanish Judaism and still has two old building that were synagogues which should be visited. The first building is named the El Transito (in Calle de Samuel Levi), and was established in the 14th century by Samuel Levi, the treasurer of King Pedro I, and has now been converted into a museum of Sephardi culture by the Spanish Government. The second, now known as the Church of Santa M~ria la Blanca, is recognised as the oldest Jewish monument in Toledo as it was constructed in the 13th century.
