MEXICO CITY
The year 1550 saw Mexico report a population of more crypto-Jews than Roman Catholics even though the initial auto-da-fe where conversos were burnt at the stake occurred in Mexico City. Mexico City boasts of kosher restaurants, twenty-three synagogues as well as Jewish schools making it well equipped with Jewish facilities considering that a large majority of Mexican Jewry live here. There is an area in the city called Polanco that is considered a Jewish area and it has a number of synagogues. The downtown area is home to the first synagogue which dates back to 1912.
