Iguazu Falls in Brazil

In 1500, Brazil welcomed the first Portuguese and Jewish settlers. The Jews were Conversos, who had worked on the Portuguese sugar plantations and were escaping discrimination. As time went by they grew into key positions owning business as traders and artisans, some even owning plantations. During that period, the Dutch and Portuguese were conquering Brazil and a lot of Jews from Holland moved here leading to the opening of two synagogues in Recife during the 1640s.  In 1654, Brazil was liberated from the Dutch with one of the conditions being to let the Jews on their side emigrate.  A lot of them left and others established ‘New Amsterdam’,  New York’s initial Jewish community.

In 2000, a Mikvah that was used in the seventeenth-century was unearthed in Recife from the basement of the Tsur Israel Synagogue.

The year 1822 marked Brazil’s independence making the environment friendlier to Jews, and more came from Europe and North Africa. The early twentieth century recorded the immigration of Jews from Eastern Europe, who many generations later, make up the greater population of the Jews currently in Brazil.  1914 recorded a population of approximately 6,000 Jews, which by 1930 had increased to 30,000. Brazil closed her doors to Jewish settlers from 1937 but this did not stop the flow of Jews into the country.

In 1951, the CONIB, a principal organization was founded with a membership of 200 Jewish organizations. The Brazilian setting is one of tolerance towards the Jews, with a lot of integration.

All the major cities have synagogues.

I initially went to Brazil with plans to spend a couple of weeks thee. Almost three moths later I was leaving because my visa was about to expire.

Brazil is a huge country and there is plenty to see. As for Jewish communities there are many all over the place. I spent time meeting the communities in, Rio D’janairo, Sao Paulo, Salvador, Belle Horezonte, Curitiba, and Porto Alegrea, as well as meeting Jews in other smaller cities.

What I liked a lot about Brazil was the availability of Fresh Juice everywhere. Though the further north you go towards the rain forest areas the more there is available. Drinking loads of fresh juice suited my kosher diet.

I have some old school friends in Brazil which made things very nice. They were able to really show me around in the community.

Brazil for me was a very Jewish experience because I spent Purim and Pessach there. This gave me an opportunity to really meet the communities.

I highly recommend a visit to this wonderful country.
