Sydney Harbour Bridge during the Olympics

In 1788, the earliest Jew to set foot in Australia disembarked from the first of the prisoner ships from the United Kingdom. But frequent and structured worship did not begin until the 1820’s.

In 1816 the first liberated Jewish pioneer arrived. Throughout the nineteenth century, the community increased, and the first synagogue was launched in the mid-1840s. The pogroms and the gold rush, occurrences in Eastern Europe, stimulated the immigration of more Jews.

Jews have played a huge role in the lives of Australians, especially with Sir John Monash, a devout Jew, leading the ANZAC military in the First World War as commander.  Australia holds the biggest proportion of Holocaust survivors globally as approximately 7,000 Jewish exiles migrated here from Nazi Europe. They have a great impact on the current community, which continues to grow and is predominantly religious.  Sir Issac Issacs was the first Australian-born Jew, and one of the two Jews to hold the position of Governors–General.

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry heads the community. The Jewish children are enrolled in Jewish schools with 75% attendance in primary and 55% in secondary. The rate of inter-marriage is considerably low.

The biggest community of about 50,000 can be found in Melbourne, followed by Sydney with 40,000.

I spent more than six years in Australia – a year in Melbourne, five in Sydney and bits of time around the rest of the country.  Australia is my second home. It’s a fascinating place and I could write a book about it.  To start covering all the Jewish communities, places to eat and things to do would take a long time. Perhaps I’ll get to it soon.

Keep in mind that Australia is a very big place. It is a 4.5 hour flight from Sydney to Perth. I spent six years in Australia and though I saw a lot of it, there is still much I’ve not seen.

Was there for a Shabbat over Chanukah once. Went with some Yeshivah boys from Sydney to spend time with the Canberra Jewish community and to present the prime minister with a menorah. We did not get to meet him. He was too busy. There is usually a minyan on Shabbat and on the Chaggim.

I worked here for three years. It is one of the most  historic and beautiful synagogues in the world. There is also a library and small museum. Synagogue tours are offered usually on Monday and Thursday mornings.

I highly recommend going on a Shabbat morning to here the choir and Chazan. If you call the Shul during the week they can usually get you a place to eat lunch.
